REACH

The regulation 1907/2006/EC, better known as REACH, came into force on June 1, 2007 and is the new regulation for chemicals within the EU. REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals.

The aim of this regulation is to harmonize and simplify the legislation for chemicals within the EU. However, up to now the new rule of law has often proved confusing, especially in view of the pre-registration, which can be carried out since June 1, 2008 within a 6 month period. The aim of the pre-registration is to establish a forum for various suppliers and importers of the same substances.

Due to the pre-registration, the deadlines for the actual registration by producers and importers are extended depending on the properties and the quantity of the substances. For substances which have not been pre-registered by December 1, 2008, the rule “no data, no market” will be applied. These substances will not be allowed to be put into circulation unless the registration has been completed. Of course, no company wants to miss that deadline. However, it remains unclear to some exactly which products must be registered.

Generally, all substances and preparations are covered by the new chemicals regulation. Articles, in contrast, are only covered by REACH if a substance is present in those articles in quantities totalling over one ton per producer or importer per year and the same substance is intended to be released under normal or reasonably foreseeable conditions of use. Furthermore the agency has to be informed if a substance of very high concern is present in those articles in quantities totalling over one ton per producer or importer per year and the concentration of the substance in those articles exceeds 0.1 % weight by weight.

All CERAMIS® products are, according to our present knowledge, articles which do not correspond with above mentioned criteria. This means for our customers within the EU, who in compliance with REACH act as importers, that none of the substances contained in CERAMIS® products have to be registered.

We are in contact with our suppliers to make sure that they are putting in place measures to ensure business continuity.

Stand-up pouch for Schwartz’ new generation recipe mixes

End of 2007, Schwartz, McCormick's leading brand in the UK, launched a stand-up pouch with a transparent window and high barrier on the UK market.

The new pouch replaces the former standard alu-based triplex stand-up pouch. The structure of the new pouch is PET12µm / printing / PET–CERAMIS® 12µm / PE80 µm. Thanks to the special PET and PE structure, the pack has an easy-tear system in the Cross Direction (CD). The high barrier laminate furthermore fulfils the requirements for high quality printing.

Just like the former alu-based pouch, the new structure offers stiffness for reliable stand-up performance, low permeability allowing long shelf life and resistance to aggressive filling goods. However, the big plus lies in its transparency.
