First PLA World Congress a great success

The first PLA World Congress hosted by “bioplastics MAGAZINE” took place on September 9-10, 2008 in Munich, Germany. The Congress attracted about 170 experts and interested delegates from more than 35 countries. Delegates from the packaging and other industries, universities, research institutes and similar organisations, as well as dedicated PLA experts, came from all over Europe, North America and countries as far away as Costa Rica, Australia, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

The presentations given during the two day Congress covered topics from the production of polylactic acid (PLA) to their possible improvement via additives, even encompassing packaging ready for sale. A presentation about multilayer barrier films based on CERAMIS®-PLA was part of the comprehensive programme.

As the conference was considered by many – delegates, speakers, and the organisers alike – a great success, a future PLA World Congress will most certainly take place.

Technology
No risk with CERAMIS® coatings

For a long time scientists have viewed nano particles as the magic problem solvers of the 20th century for technical and medical challenges. However, in the past few months, critics are beginning to also issue warnings about the dangers associated with the tiny elements. Reports in packaging magazines are increasingly addressing the unknown risks of nano particles and resulting uncertainties.

In general, particles with a size up to 100 nanometers are called nano particles. The CERAMIS® coatings do not fulfill these requirements since only the coating thickness is in the nano scale. The surface of the CERAMIS® layer is theoretically endless and not separable from the base film. Even during the conversion of SiOx coated films (e. g. printing or laminating) no nano particles can emerge. In addition the CERAMIS® layer is always embedded between two plastic films and thus is not in direct contact with the filling goods.

CERAMIS® barrier films are in compliance with all European and US regulations for food packaging materials. Given what we know to be true today there is no risk in using CERAMIS® films.

Flow-packs with crystal-clear and glossy windows for energy bars

The flow pack with transparent, glossy windows for Balance® Organic nutrition and energy bars is an example of a close co-operation with one of our customers. The customer had envisioned a clear package that allowed consumers to see the bar’s healthy mix of organic fruits, nuts and grains. Alcan Packaging developed an innovative, high performing, crystal-clear packaging solution based on a CERAMIS® film which provides the required barrier properties.

The Balance® Organic package also uses a cold seal which allows horizontal flow-wrap lines to work at the highest possible speeds without applying heat.

The transparent package was a winner of the Flexible Packaging Association (FPA) award.
